The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) and the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), 1990, state:
no otherwise qualified disabled individual in the United States... shall, solely on the basis of disability, be denied access to, or the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity provided by an institution receiving federal financial assistance
All Doane programs are accessible to students with disabilities. For buildings, or portions of buildings that are not accessible, Doane will help reschedule classes to accessible sites or take other steps to open programs to any student with mobility impairments. Students interested in services related to a disability should notify the college of any special circumstances that would affect their ability to compete equally in the college environment. To assist the college in providing services, documentation of such disabilities must be provided by qualified professionals upon request.
How-to Request Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
This process is initiated by the Student. We recommend starting this process as early as possible to ensure your needs are met before the start of the semester/term.
- Gather Documentation and Send to Diane Kaye, Director of Disability Services
- Documentation is to be provided by the student. Doane University will not request documentation on behalf of the student.
- Acceptable forms of documentation are:Please note: IEP's and 504 plans may provide helpful insight into what accommodations will benefit the student, but they do not obligate Doane University to provide the same accommodations.
- Statement of specific disability from a qualified professional (i.e. physician, therapist, counselor, certified educational psychologist, etc.)
- Copies of secondary school records establishing the existence of a disability and accommodations provided at the secondary level.

Accommodations must be requested ever 16-week semester, or 8-week term.
- Bring a copy of your class schedule to the Academic Success Center or email Diane Kaye, Director of Disability Services at email@example.com. This ensures that student accommodations are being sent to the appropriate faculty member, and the student has communicated their renewal request with their Disability Services Coordinator.
- To make changes to your accommodations at any time, please contact Diane Kaye to discuss other options.
- To be eligible for disability-related services, an individual must have a documented disabling condition as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), 1990. Disabilities served include physical and mental impairments that may include, but are not limited to vision, hearing, mobility, learning, systemic, psychiatric, and brain injury. Doane University requires documentation from an appropriate, licensed professional to certify individuals as having a disability. The cost of obtaining documentation will be borne by the individual. If the initial documentation in incomplete or inadequate to determine the extent of the disability and appropriate accommodations, Doane University will have the discretion to require supplemental assessment of disability. The cost of the supplemental assessment shall also be borne by the individual. Pending receipt of documentation, Doane University reserves the right to deny services or accommodations.
