Alternative Breaks

Through Doane University Alternative Breaks, students have the opportunity to develop into lifelong active citizens in local, national and global communities through diverse, direct-service experiences dedicated to social justice. Breaks occur over academic fall and spring breaks as well as National Days of Service.

Alternative Weeklong Breaks

Alternative Breaks are an opportunity for Doane students to spend their Fall or Spring break traveling to a different city across the United States and serving local non-profit organizations.  Students will engage in the experience as a conscientious citizen, concerned with discovering root causes of social issues and committed to becoming active citizens who create positive change.

Students need to apply for Alternative Breaks, but the cost of these experiences is low for students - around $40/trip - thanks to the generosity of Doane alumni who support these experiences for current students.

Alternative Day Breaks

Alternative Day Breaks (ADB) occur during National Days of Service for students to volunteer at nonprofits in and around the Crete community. During these experience students will learn about local needs and ways to get involved more regularly.

Current Doane students can inquire about upcoming Alternative Breaks by emailing volunteer@doane.edu.
