CONNECTIONS First-Year First-Generation Student Leadership retreat.
In an effort to address the issues that affect the success of first-year first-generation (FYFG) students, Multicultural Support Services organized and hosted this event to (1) acclimate FYFG students to campus life and the local community, (2) inform FYFG students of available resources that are crucial to their success, and (3) to create a FYFG community dedicated to perseverance and success.
Although there are other services on campus, this was the first leadership retreat constructed for this group of students. This comprehensive program called CONNECTIONS was a day-and-a-half retreat. Each participant was assigned a peer mentor. Activities included completing the Gallup Strength Finder assessment, break out sessions, and a dinner. A strong commitment was made for personal success and developing FYFG student leadership skills.
Funding for this event was secured through the NASPA New Innovation grant.
With the launch of #DoaneConnections, FYFG students and employees on campus were also given "1ST GENERATION PROUD" water bottles and window stickers in an effort to further display that Doane is #FirstGenForward.
